She Deserves a Living Income: She Deserves Fairtrade.

These are the strap lines for Fairtrade Fortnight 2019 (February 25 - March 10)

In this country we try to ensure that women’s pay and working conditions are equal to men’s, but in the developing world there is still a great gap.  We all enjoy eating chocolate, and cocoa is the basic ingredient.  It needs a hot, humid climate, so planting the bushes, clearing weeds and harvesting the beans is a gruelling task.  The people who grow the cocoa have probably never tasted chocolate, and could not afford to buy a bar.  There are many large plantations where women and children are employed at very low wages and in poor conditions.  But there are also co-operatives producing Fairtrade cocoa where the price paid for the crop is fixed, the members receive a premium to spend on community projects and child labour is banned. The Fairtrade Mark on products made with cocoa from these co-operatives guarantees this.

On 10th March at 10.30 am at St James Church Southbroom Devizes there will be Fairtrade Coffee and Cakes
